Day 42: Meigs County, Tennessee / Gordon County, Georgia - Good weather allowed the cranes and crew to take off today. However, some of the young cranes had difficulty staying in formation behind the ultralights. Because the pilots were afraid that the birds would drop out during the flight, they returned 12 cranes to the day's starting location in Meigs County, Tennessee. The other 4 whooping cranes continued the day's flight and landed in Gordon County, Georgia. Tomorrow, the migration will try to fly the 12 cranes to the next stop in Georgia.
Whooping cranes # 1 and #2 from the "2001 Flock" were seen at Hiwassee Refuge in Tennessee, joining their classmate #6 at this State waterfowl refuge.
