2001 Fall Whooping Crane Migration

Bledsoe County, Tennessee- Monday Nov. 12, 2001

The migration team took off this morning with six birds. However, almost immediately one bird turned around and flew back to the temporary pen. That bird was #7 (not that same bird that turned back on Friday). It was crated and trucked along with bird #4 to the next location. The remaining 5 birds had trouble crossing a high ridge so Joe, the pilot, found a suitable place to land 18 miles short of their scheduled stop.

Cumulative migration distance = 691.4 miles
